Move Semen Between Locations
Move Semen Between Locations
Use this screen to record a transfer of semen straws for a bull from one storage location to another — for example, moving straws from a delivery tank into long-term storage, or consolidating inventory between canisters.
A move is recorded as two linked transactions sharing the same timestamp: a negative quantity at the source location and an equal positive quantity at the destination location. Both sides of the transfer appear in transaction history and reports.
Fields
Bull
Select the bull whose semen is being moved. Only bulls with a positive inventory balance at some location are available. After selecting a bull, the Source Location dropdown updates automatically to show only the locations that have straws available for that bull.
Source Location
The location you are moving straws from. Populated after a bull is selected; only locations with a positive balance for that bull appear. The screen also displays the Available to transfer count for the selected bull and location — this is the current net balance (sum of all transactions) at that location.
Transfer Quantity
The number of straws to move. Must be a positive number and cannot exceed the available quantity at the source location.
Transfer Date
The date the transfer occurred. Defaults to today.
Comment
Optional. A note about the transfer (e.g., "Moved to Tank 2 — Tank 1 going out of service"). Applied to both the source and destination transaction records.
Destination Location
The location you are moving straws to. All active semen locations are available. Cannot be the same as the source location.
Submitting
Click Submit to record the transfer. GEM inserts two transactions simultaneously:
-[quantity]at the source location+[quantity]at the destination location
Both carry the same timestamp so they can be identified as a pair in the Detailed Sire Inventory report.
Add or Subtract Semen
This screen is used to record any change to a bull's semen inventory at a specific location — whether you are adding newly purchased or collected straws, or subtracting straws that have been used, discarded, or otherwise removed.
Reports - Semen Inventory
GEM provides three semen inventory reports, each suited to a different purpose. All reports can be exported to HTML, Word (DOC), or Excel (XLS).
